The Cicadas

4 June 2026 · 4 min read

I've experienced a phenomenon that I've called it The Cicadas since I was a kid, before I had any idea what it was. No framework, no tradition, no explanation. Just this thing that happened, that I eventually named after the sound it most resembled

It's not tinnitus. Tinnitus is a constant or triggered frequency, located in the ears, caused by something going wrong in the auditory system. The Cicadas aren't like that in any dimension

They present as a cicada-like tone. That specific oscillating shimmer, high frequency, insect quality. But it's not in my ears. It arises in various regions of my head or neck, sometimes shifting, sometimes distributed across more than one place at once. There's a pressure sensation with it as well. Like a low-grade air pressure change, the kind you feel when you're underwater or the cabin depressurizes. Something in the containing medium shifts

The quality changes. Sometimes sharper, sometimes softer, sometimes not there at all. That variability is part of it. It's not uniform noise. It carries information by its character, not just its presence

What it does is harder to explain without sounding like a particular kind of person, but I've stopped worrying about that

It tells me when someone is thinking of me. About to text. About to call. Directing their attention my way from wherever they are. It signifies an energetic connection to me. I've been tracking this long enough that coincidence isn't the right explanation. Something in the relational field between me and another person activates, and the Cicada registers it before any conventional signal arrives. Rupert Sheldrake spent years doing controlled research on exactly this, telephone telepathy studies with statistically significant above-chance results. The mechanism is genuinely unknown. The phenomenon isn't. It's quite common

More broadly, I understand it now as the experience of a transmission arriving before I have the tools to parse it. A compressed signal. The Cicadas confirm receipt. What the signal actually contains resolves later. Sometimes minutes later, sometimes days. It seeps into consciousness and expands when the right trigger appears (whatever that may be). The trigger doesn't generate the knowing. It completes the decompression of something that is now already there. This is a significant contributor to my intuitive experience of life

This is why I trust it. It arrives before expectation. The alert is never anticipatory. Whatever comes after comes after. It's been a consistent part of my intuitive experience for my entire life, and been validated personally over and over throughout the years

It amplifies under specific conditions, and those conditions have stayed consistent across decades

Philosophically dense material does it. Deep reading, certain conversations, anything that opens bandwidth and quiets the ordinary cognitive foreground. The signal-to-noise ratio shifts. In certain intense situations, it's accompanied by goose bumps. Intimate connection does it too. When the relational field between myself and another person is particularly active, it strengthens. Meditation amplifies it, any kind. The Cicadas predates every practice I've taken up, but practice refines the reception

Plant dietas made it very loud, but that's not surprising. The Amazonian dieta tradition is specifically designed to clear ordinary sensory interference and open access to exactly this register of perception. The healers who work with those traditions receive their icaros through a similar channel. The insect-like buzzing tone before transmission is recognized across that lineage. I wasn't anomalous there. I was just working with what I already had

It's also documented as one of the main precursors to channeling, for those training in that direction. The signal that the channel is open. The compressed packet landing before the content resolves. Children sometimes experience it without any framework and have no idea what to do with it. I was that child. The decades since have been building the codec

The Nada yoga tradition calls it anahata nada, the unstruck sound, the internal sound that arises without an external source. Four levels of nada from gross to subtle, the innermost being para nada, the transcendent sound that precedes samadhi. What I experience corresponds to the inner registers of that system. Variable quality, regionally located, arising in stillness or in the right kind of engagement

Greek tradition associated cicadas specifically with the muses and with souls who had moved past ordinary perception. In Taoism they represent transcendence. Multiple independent traditions landing on the same symbol, the same sound, for the same kind of experience. That's not coincidence

I've spent most of my life not talking about this, partly because it's hard to describe without triggering someone's clinical pattern-matching, and partly because there's nothing to fix. It isn't a problem. It's a faculty

The cleaner my system is, the more reliable it gets. The protocol, the fasting, the elimination of substances, the decades of inner work. All of it has sharpened the signal. I'm not trying to maintain it. It maintains itself. I'm just trying not to generate too much noise
