"You have the chart of an astrologer"

I've heard that from every astrologer who has ever read my chart. One of them went further. He laughed, and said most astrologers would be willing to die right now if they could have this chart for their next life

I laughed too. Then I thought about it for a few days

On paper he's right. It's a generous chart, full of dignity and reception, the kind of wheel that makes another astrologer lean in. What he didn't say (and what took me most of my life to learn) is that the gifts are the easy part. Anyone can carry gifts. The chart also sends a bill

The first thing every astrologer comments on is my Ascendant. Uranus sits two minutes of arc from it

Two minutes. That's about as exact as a conjunction gets, and anything that close to the rising degree colours the body, the first reaction, and the basic sense of where I belong. For me, the answer has nearly always been slightly off to the side of wherever everyone else is standing

I've never minded that much. Most of the astrologers who've read for me call it the defining feature of my personality, and I agree with them

A lot of them also assume it makes me a troublemaker. It doesn't. In me it shows up as absolute devotion to authenticity and sovereignty (not just mine, but everyone's). I'll defend your right to be exactly who you are as fiercely as I defend my own. The other side of that is expectation. I almost expect everyone who matters to me to be entirely themselves, and to take responsibility for how they show up in the world. When they don't, I tend to drift away

The reason is simple. We can only be loved if we're authentic. Otherwise we're trying to win love for a mask, and that love never touches us. What's more, it convinces us we aren't worthy of the love that's offered (since it was offered to the mask). We end up training other people to love someone who isn't us

Uranus in Libra is a polite kind of outsider. He wants freedom, fairness, and things that are well made, and He would rather slip quietly out of the room than knock the furniture over. My Moon sits right beside Him at nine degrees Libra, so my feelings run on the same current. They come in fast and full, flood the chest for a moment, and then clear. That's the governor I've written about. Once the intensity crosses a certain line it tips over into comedy, there's a laugh somewhere in the ribs, and I drop back into the Witness

Then there's Venus, and everything else answers to Her. Libra is rising, so She rules the chart, and She sits at the very top of it in Cancer, in the 10th house

Jupiter sits in my 1st house in Libra. That's Venus's sign. Venus sits in Cancer, which is the sign where Jupiter is exalted. So each one is holding the other's dignity, like two people who keep the other's house key. That alone would be worth mentioning. What makes them stop is that the two are also in an exact square, fifteen minutes of arc apart

A square is friction. A reception is goodwill. Put them together and you get a partnership that never stops working

Venus is busy with the Moon as well. She's in the Moon's sign, and the Moon is in Hers. No tight aspect between them this time, so it's quieter. How I show up in the world, and what I need in order to feel safe, are tied together at the root. One doesn't move without the other

My Sun is at twenty-two degrees Gemini in the 9th house. The old astrologers called the 9th the house of God, because it's where the Sun has His joy. It's the house of religion, philosophy, and long journeys, and of counsel and divination as well (astrology included). My Sun sits there in His joy, and in His own decan too

His ruler Mercury is right there with Him, at the first degree of Gemini. That's Mercury in Their own sign, in Their own bound, and in a decan ruled by Jupiter, which ties Them back to the Jupiter in my 1st house. A planet that dignified is said to ride in its own chariot. They're also twenty-two degrees from the Sun, close to as far as Mercury ever gets, so They rise ahead of the Sun as a morning star, well clear of the beams

For all that dignity, They're restless

Mercury in Gemini collects. They jump from field to field, keep whatever fits, and rarely bother to tell me why. From the outside it looks haphazard. I think the pieces are always going somewhere, even when I can't see the picture yet, and over time they've proven that to me again and again. Mercury trines Uranus and the Ascendant across the air signs, so when the pieces do connect, I know before I can explain it

The distance from the Sun matters more than people think. When Mercury is buried in the Sun's light, thinking and identity blur together, and every idea feels like the self. Mine stand on Their own. There's some space between me and my mind, and that space is a big part of what lets me drop back into the Witness and watch my thoughts work

Uranus on the Ascendant. A Sun in His joy in the house of divination, with a dignified Mercury beside it. Pluto digging around in the 12th

I can see why they keep saying it

Saturn is where my chart parts ways with most people's experience of Him

Most people think of Saturn as an obstacle. The traffic jam, the closed door, the delay that never ends. For me He's a friend, and a friend to my 1st house in particular (Libra rises, and Libra is the sign of His exaltation). Mine sits in Taurus in the 8th house, in Venus's sign, so He answers to my chart ruler. Taurus suits Him, too. It's a slow, patient, and steady sign, and Saturn never was in a hurry. It's a day chart as well, which makes Him the benefic of the sect

I think of Him as the Sifu. The one making sure I practise my forms, keep my routines, and hold to my protocols. A strict coach who expects the best from you because He knows what you're capable of. Saturn rewards devotion, so I'm devoted, and I'm grateful for what He offers in return. He makes me work for depth, and what He gives me, He gives for good. My standards live here as much as anywhere. People tell me they're unrealistic. In my own life they've turned out to be practical, repeatable, and quietly satisfying

Now the bill

The Sun squares Pluto at twenty-four degrees Virgo, down in my 12th house. Pluto in Virgo goes after the small mechanics: the body, its chemistry, and the routine done exactly right. Squaring the Sun, He turns curiosity into scrutiny. Nothing gets into my model on faith. I call it the doorman, and it's a big part of why I'm hard to fool. It's also heavy. Once a question starts with this placement it doesn't let go, and some of them have been chewing on me for decades

Pluto in the 12th has shaped my practice, and my path, as much as anything in the chart. The 12th is the hidden house, the place of retreat and the inner work nobody sees. Pluto there brings transformation, and Virgo makes it a little perfectionist. I'm not chasing a goal, and I don't think of myself as broken and in need of healing. It's more like alchemical purification is built into who I am. The process of purification is always ongoing. Each moment is one step on the path toward the horizon, but the horizon (by definition) is something we can never reach

Mars sits at seven degrees Cancer, just past the Midheaven, the highest planet in the chart. Cancer is His fall. Mine is a day chart, so Mars is out of sect as well (the malefic working against the grain). He's not my guy. From up there He squares my Moon and my Uranus Ascendant, so the urge to act runs straight into a Libra need for peace. When it works, the friction becomes a boundary, a standard, or a door that stays closed. When it doesn't, it's what sends me back inside

He does have one thing going for Him. He shares Cancer with Venus, up there in the 10th, and Mars and Venus have been the great lovers since the Greeks told stories about Ares and Aphrodite. Cancer is the sign of home, and of the parent. So my Mars was never built to conquer anything. His drive goes into care. Structure, comfort, affection, guidance, and the steady attention that helps (hopefully) the people whose lives touch mine feel safe enough to grow

So here's the shape of it. Mars and Pluto lean on a Libra Moon that wants harmony, and the chart does what Cancer always does. It builds a shell. Solitude has kept my peace for a long time. It works. It also costs, and I know exactly what

The Nodes point the way out. My South Node is in Virgo in the 12th, in the same sign and house as Pluto. That's the old groove. Analysis done alone, problems solved in private, the hermit at his desk. The North Node is in Pisces in the 6th, the house of daily practice and service. The road runs toward surrender inside the routine. Keep the discipline. Let go of controlling what it produces

The gifts came easy. This part doesn't
